Wireless Headphones on a Budget – Skullcandy’s Push Active Reviewed

There are plenty of true wireless earbuds designed for exercise, but many of our favourites aren’t cheap. Skullcandy’s Push Active earphones give you a secure fit and a water-resistance rating that is above average for an affordable price.

Skullcandy focused on the basics here rather than adding a bunch of features. There isn’t much audio technology on the Push Active, like noise cancellation. The earphones are IP55 rated for water resistance, comfortable, and boast a 44-hour battery life.

Skull-iQ technology is also on these affordable earbuds so you can control them hands-free. If you want it to work, you’ll need the Skullcandy app, and it’s impressive how smoothly it works.

Skull-iQ keeps up with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, Apple’s Siri, and Google Assistant. You just have to say, “Hey, Skullcandy…” to get started.

Skullcandy Push Active come in 3 colours; black/orange, dark blue/green, and light grey/blue.

The earphones fit securely, but if you wear glasses or sunglasses, the ear hooks might be a problem. There’s a pair of small eartips, a medium eartip, and a large eartip in each set of Skullcandy ears.

Thanks to the plastic design, the headphones are also very light. Push Actives are well-designed for everyday use, so they don’t feel cheap in a bad way. You can see when the headphones are on thanks to LEDs on the buds, and the large case makes it easy to pick them up and put them back in place.

In order to stay in place, wireless earbuds have weighted designs, and others have materials or an angled in-ear portion. They all work to some extent, but ear hooks are the best unless you catch them on something. Likewise, most of the weight of the bud sits on the more robust area on top of your ear, so it doesn’t feel heavy inside your ear. As a result, they are very comfortable to wear, even for long periods of time, so they are ideal for short workouts and long training sessions alike.

You can use the on-ear buttons or the voice controls to control the earphones. They’re easy to use:

  • One press controls playback and calls on either earpiece
  • You can adjust the volume by double pressing the left and right earpieces, respectively
  • Pressing and holding the left ear launches Spotify
  • You can stream audio using Skull-IQ by holding the right earpiece for three seconds
  • Press and hold the left earpiece for three seconds to receive Skull-IQ transmissions

Battery Performance

According to Skullcandy, the earpieces last roughly 10 hours on battery, with an additional 34 hours with the charging case. They’re great numbers for true wireless earphones and explain why the charging case is so big. Your results, however, will vary depending on your volume and usage patterns.

Final Thoughts

Skullcandy Push Active headphones deliver premium sound with boosted bass and bright highs. They have an app with adjustable EQ and a long battery life. During workouts, the ear hooks keep the buds in place, and the angled earpiece fits firmly but comfortably in your ear.

At this price, you won’t need to worry about the battery dying mid-exercise either, because the 44-hour battery life is some of the best you’ll find.

Skull-iQ’s voice commands and smart features are nice, but the main strength is how they master battery life, water resistance, convenience, and fit.

Having a good pair of headphones for exercise means they should be secure, easy to use, and suitable for all types of workouts. The Skullcandy Push Active checks all these boxes, combining a practical design, long-lasting battery, and great sound.
