QNAP have redefined the way in which we look at the business grade NAS with the introduction of the TS-453 mini. The TS-453 mini features a new look stylish, glossy and vertical design that is a significant departure from their traditional lineup. The new design is marketed as taking around 29% less surface area than comparable models.  Whilst it features a compact design, it doesn’t lack in some key hardware features:

  • Intel quad-core Celeron 2.0GHz (burst up to 2.41GHz)
  • 2 or 8GB DDR3L models
  • Supports up to 4 x SATA 6Gb/s, 3Gb/s 3.5″ & 2.5″ HDDs & SSDs
  • In-built IR sensor
  • HDMI out

Memory upgrades couldn’t be easier now with this new model:

The software installation was fairly standard as far as QNAP installs go with a few new nice touches.

Media Features

The QNAP TS-453 mini sports a range of multimedia applications suited for any home media environment:

  • Real-time HD video transcoding and streaming – with the celeron quad core processor it was a simple task for the TS-453 mini to transcode and stream HD multimedia content to our various test devices
  • Support for Kodi (formerly known as XBMC) – Kodi is arguably one of the most popular multi-platform media solutions around and it was great to see QNAP continuing its support with its inclusion as one of the supported apps available for user install
  • QvPC Technology – take advantage of the QvPC technology and plug the TS-453 mini directly into a large screen via the HDMI port at the rear of the unit. This technology supports 4K and 1080p playback with 7.1 audio via Kodi

Summary

The TS-453 mini is a great NAS for the small business and home market. With its refreshing new design and small footprint it’s perfect for most situations. The TS-453 mini is available now, check with your local stockist for price and availability.

  1. Is it possible to stream two different movies to two different devices via this QNAP? Say “Iron Man 3” via HDMI to the TV and “Jurassic World” via Ethernet to my PC, one floor above. Taking into account that I have the right length and type of cables.

  2. I was wondering whether the processor could handle those transcoding on the fly as I intend to get one to stream to about 4-5 devices at the same time. So in other words, I just need to use a switcher, plug in those Cat6 Ethernet cables and I can view different movies in different rooms all at the same time. HD quality? No jerky framerates and all?

    1. There are other variables to consider as well as the QNAPs ability to concurrently run 5 streams of video. If you are simply streaming it should be able to handle it fine, but if you are transcoding then you will be working it fairly hard for 5 different streams and the only way to know for sure is to give it a go. I’m away for a few weeks but could test it when I return.

      1. I can wait. It would be great if you could test it out. It appears to me that transcoding on the fly would be the easiest way, if not I would need to get something like an Apple TV or similar for each and every device.
