PNY CS2140 M.2 NVMe SSD Review & PNY M.2 SSD Enclosure Elite-X

In case you were looking for a comparatively affordable entry-level PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD, PNY has released their CS2140 M.2 NVMe SSD with a transfer rate of 3,600MB/s as well as a 5-year warranty. I recently had the chance to review the CS2140 along with the external SSD enclosure. This connects the NVMe externally to your PC via USB-C (preferred) or USB.

With its small dimensions (22 x 80 x 4mm) and weight of just 6.6 grams, the CS2140 M.2 NVMe SSD is like other NVMe SSDs on the market.

CS2140 M.2 NVMe SSD Features

  • An upgrade to NVMe Gen4 from a SATA-based SSD in a computer that supports NVMe
  • A high performance SSD with up to two times the performance of an entry-level Gen3 x4 SSD
  • A faster start-up and faster application launch
  • Improved overall system performance and reliable storage
  • Cool and quiet operation, low power consumption

Installation

It is extremely easy to install an NVMe SSD into this product. All you have to do is slide out the interior component and then connect an NVMe SSD into the connector and then reassemble the product. The process takes less than a minute.

The build quality is excellent, especially the metallic case, which offers additional protection.

Performance

CrystalDiskMark scored marginally below PNY’s reported read/write times based on benchmarking.

With Blackmagic’s benchmarking app running on a 16″ MacBook Pro, the CS2140 M.2 NVMe SSD resulted in the following scores with PNY’s M.2 SSD Enclosure Elite-X (USB-C):

The M.2 SSD Enclosure Elite-X is the ideal solution for individuals looking to connect an NVMe drive to their PC through either USB-C or USB 3.0 ports. It comes with all the cables necessary to connect the SSD to your computer through either USB-C or USB 3.0 ports.

Final Thoughts

The CS2140 M.2 NVMe SSD and the M.2 SSD Enclosure Elite-X are two products from PNY that are reasonably priced. The CS2140 M.2 NVMe SSD provides an entry level drive with excellent performance, and the M.2 SSD Enclosure Elite-X offers NVMe portability.
