Logitech R500

When you think of Logitech, you probably start thinking about their most popular products, mice, keyboards, and speakers. However, over the past few years, Logitech has explored other digital areas emphasizing the development of products for PC navigation, digital music, and home-entertainment control amongst other things.

Thanks to these new developments, we were lucky enough to get hands-on with one of their recent presentation products – the Logitech R500 Laser Presentation Remote. On paper, it seems to be an ideal product for educational, business and home purposes so let’s take a look.

Design

R500 features a simplistic design. It fits in the palm of your head and features textured buttons and soft rubber padded no-slip surface. Both things allow smoother and more convenient functionality, assuring that the device doesn’t slip out of your hand, or that you accidentally press the wrong button.

Under the Hood

The Logitech R500 Laser Presentation Remote is a device that allows you to control your presentation wirelessly, efficiently and in comfort. The controller is compact measuring at only 12.3 x 3.6 x 2.4 cm and weighs roughly 0.5 kg (with battery/without USB receiver.)

USB Connection

The receiver is tiny, compatible with Windows 7, 8 and 10 10, and macOS X 10.12 or advanced macOS versions. R500’s receiver is also compatible with Chrome OS, as well as with Linux 2.6 and other advanced Linux systems.

Bluetooth Connection

Bluetooth connectivity works with Windows 8 and Windows 10 systems, Mac OS X 10.1 (and future Mac OS systems), Androids 5.0+ and iOS 8+. Note that the device should have an internet connection to download the necessary software.

Key Specifications

Some of the key specifications include:

  • 2.4GHz wireless speed (regarding Bluetooth connectivity), with a wireless range of up to 20 m
  • LED lights to indicate the battery life and connectivity status
  • Battery life of approximately one year
  • Type 2 laser with a wavelength between 640 – 660nm

Hands On with the R500

The R500 also packs a red laser pointer

The Logitech R500 features a straightforward control panel with three buttons: laser, next and previous. It has a 20m operating range, which may vary, depending on the surroundings as well as computer settings.

The R500 also connects to the Logitech Presentation app, which allows you to customize Next and Previous button, but to also set a timer on a presentation. Furthermore, you can use the app to monitor the battery life, and to keep your computer awake; your computer won’t go to sleep when you use this app regardless of the pc settings.

Overall, the R500 functions were very smooth. The 3-button system helps to eliminate confusion, allowing you to focus on the screen. No need to worry about whether you are pressing the wrong button.

Most importantly, the laser is accurate. Rapid and bright. As a side note, the R500 also features Power-Saving mode. We didn’t use it as the review period was short but when enabled, it disables the laser, giving you an extra week of battery time.

Final Thoughts

The Logitech R500 Laser Presentation Remote is simple, convenient and compatible with all modern systems and devices. It is easy to use, reasonably priced, and very reliable. It has its own app, giving you more control over the device’s function, but also an insight into the battery life.

The device has broad compatibility and appeal. It can be used in various roles including office workers, advisors, salespeople, teachers, professors, and students.
