We live in a fairly mobile world with ever increasing storage demands as camcorders, smartphones, tablets and dashcams etc… become a part of our everyday life. Lexar acknowledged this with the release of their new high performance 200GB microSDXC card and USB reader.

To provide us with the fastest possible experience, the 200GB microSDXC card boasts transfer speeds of up to 95MB/s with the reader also being USB 3.0 compatible. 200GB is enough to store more than 17 hours of High Definition videos, 33,000 photos, or 28,000 songs.

Performance

The performance of memory cards can be variable as it is generally limited by the quality of the integrated card reader of the device. Having the Lexar supplied USB 3.0 reader helps but not always accessible when using smaller devices such as a mobile phone. For this reason, we ran our benchmarks using the in-built microSD card reader in a Microsoft Surface Pro 2.

The speed tests were performed using 2 popular freeware tools: ATTO and SpeedOut.

Whilst not achieving read speeds of 95MB/s, we managed to hit over 80MB/s a couple of times using ATTO which is still a great result considering we used an internal card reader and people don’t generally hit the marketed speeds during normal use.

Similarly, from the results, we can see that the performance improved as the file size increased. This makes it perfect for portable and/or smaller video recording devices.

Final Thoughts

Lexar have seen the gap that exists with high speed, high capacity storage and have come to the party with their 200GB microSDXC offering. This little gem not only performed well but exceeded our initial expectations.

For anyone in the market for a fast microSDXC card, the Lexar 200GB is one card that shouldn’t be passed up. It offers great performance in a tiny package and perfect for those with devices with high capacity demands such as GoPros, smartphones and security surveillance cameras.

We rate this as highly recommended.
