The next evolution of the HUAWEI Mate X foldable handset was launched earlier via a virtual press conference themed “TOGETHER, Connecting Possibilities.” Dubbed the HUAWEI Mate Xs, it boats all of Huawei’s latest technology and is their most impressive high-end device based on the Kirin 990 5G SoC and an improved Falcon Wing Design. The power under the hood is designed to deliver a powerful and seamless user experience across smartphone and tablet modes.
“The HUAWEI Mate X was our first foray into the foldable category and it set the standard for the industry. The HUAWEI Mate Xs is raising the bar further with even more powerful connectivity and integrated user experiences. It’s the fastest 5G smartphone of its class. Prepare to meet the unprecedented – again.”Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group
Huawei claims to deliver an authentic FullView experience with an 8-inch outwards-folding display on the HUAWEI Mate Xs. The folding screen also features a new mechanical hinge design. Compared to the original design, as seen on the HUAWEI Mate X, the more modern Falcon Wing design (made from zirconium-based liquid metal) features more than 100 interlocking parts. These components work in perfect unison to strengthen the display.
The Kirin 990 5G processor powers the HUAWEI Mate Xs. Benefiting from Huawei’s most advanced chipset, the SoC includes an octa-core CPU that comprises of:
- 2 x super-sized custom Cortex-A76 cores
- 2 x large custom Cortex-A76 cores and
- 4 x small Cortex-A55 cores
At launch, the HUAWEI Mate Xs will only support the N41 (2515-2690MHz) 5G bands. Additional bands will come later via a future update.
Huawei hasn’t let us down on the camera front either. The HUAWEI Mate Xs comes with a flagship camera system that is arranged into a vertical array along the sidebar. The SuperSensing Leica Quad Camera system features:
- 40MP primary camera (wide-angle, f/1.8)
- 16MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2)
- 8MP telephoto camera (f/2.4, OIS) and
- 3D Depth Sensing Camera.
Redefining the selfie, you can fold the Mate Xs and take advantage of the quad-camera system and get the quality of photos previously limited to the rear of the device.
Pricing and availability for Australian consumers have not been confirmed at this stage. We are told that this will be announced in the coming months.
