Unboxing and Installation
Not a lot in the box but still everything that you need to get going. The exception being HDMI and optical audio leads. The box contents included:
- EH-TW9300W projector
- WiHD transmitter
- Remote control
- Manual + software CD
- Power leads + power brick for WiHD
The included 4k WiHD transmitter makes it easy to stream 4K content to the projector from a range of supported devices. These include gaming consoles, Blu-ray players and smart phones over WiFi. We did not test the WiHD transmitter in this initial review but will come back and update when we do.
Similarly, finding a location to install the projector is made easier with the powered 2.1x optical zoom, focus and lens shift (±96% vertical and ±47% horizontal). These features mean that you no longer have to install the projector in the centre of the room anymore. However, the projector still needs to be at a right angle to the screen otherwise you do see some picture scewing.
To help calculate optimal locations for a desired viewing size, Epson provide a “Throw Distance Calculator” tool online. Using a number of variables, the tool can provide a range of installation information. As screen size can range from 30” to 300”, this can be a useful tool in planning the installation location.
Unlike some of its smaller siblings, the EH-TW9300W does not have in-built speakers. For our review, we used a Sony sound bar connected directly to the playback devices used.
The projector also includes LAN connectivity that lets you manage some aspects over the network. It also allows you to project up to 4 networked computer desktops on screen which is great in collaboration scenarios.
We had high expectations on the picture quality given the EH-TW9300W is a 4K-enhanced projector with support for Full HD, UHD BD and HDR. Epson did not fail to deliver.
The mouth-watering high contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 gave highly defined and deep black images. The colours were bright and vibrant and using some of the default picture settings, images were almost lifelike. The superb image quality we experienced can be attributed to Epson’s 3LCD technology. Having a light output of 2,500 lumens doesn’t hurt either.
The test room was 3m x 4m, darkened with sunblock curtains and we projected onto a Epson ELP-SC21B 80″ tripod screen. First up were some 1080p videos shot using the GoPro 4 Silver. Home videos never looked better, the projector didn’t miss a beat.
Next, we hooked up a Sony PlayStation 4 to see how the EH-TW9300W performed with Blu-ray playback and also in gaming scenarios.
If you have mobile devices connected to the same network as the projector, you can project from the device via the Epson iProjection app. We couldn’t get it to work on the iOS 10 beta but it worked like a charm on the current version of iOS.
Projectors have come a long way over the past few years. The Epson EH-TW9300W was very easy to setup and provided exceptional picture quality in a moderately lit and dark room. The wireless 4K adapter coupled with lens shift technology simplifies the installation process. In our opinion, this makes the projectors suitable to a much wider audience.
Likewise, it can handle a range of connected devices from gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, computers and smartphones so replaying those wedding or holidays snaps quickly is a breeze.
For anyone wanting to create their own cinema at home, the Epson EH-TW9300W wireless home projector will not disappoint. Dark blacks, bright whites and vibrant colours paired with 4K content and this projector is sure to impress even the pickiest of us.
An enthusiast can now enjoy gold class viewing in the comfort of their own home.
