Wireless surveillance security cameras have come a long way. Not too long ago, they struggled to produce quality footage due to the lens technology and wireless bandwidth. Things have evolved considerably since. The D-Link DCS-8600LH Full HD Outdoor Wi-Fi Camera is a testament to the advancement in this space.

The D-Link DCS-8600LH Full HD Outdoor Wi-Fi Camera is capable of recording video at 1080p resolution. The colours, in particular, show up bright and crisp when viewing on your mobile device.

Similarly, the 135-degree viewing angle makes it easy to monitor a sizable chunk of your property. The infrared LEDs provide night vision functionality maintaining the effectiveness of the cameras through the night.

The video can be streamed to your Android or iOS mobile device in real-time via the mydlink app. The application also supports pinch to zoom function if you need to get closer to the action. Likewise, alerts can be configured to send video clips or images to your phones if you don’t have the time (or desire) to sit and watch the live stream 24×7.

A combination of alerts and the camera’s durability means that you typically don’t need to check up on the status of your security camera often. Speaking of durability, the DCS-8600LH comes in an IP65-rated housing. What that means is that the housing can easily repel dust particles. It also does well against stronger streams of water.

The DCS-8600LH can work well in a range of temperatures (-25 to 45 °C). That said, the extreme heats we have been getting in Australia gets close to the upper limit of the camera. So, during our hot summers, it may pay to keep an eye on the camera vitals.

The D-Link caters for a range of weather conditions

The video footage can be streamed directly to the cloud or stored locally on microSD. Cloud footage is viewed using the mydlink application. Once the initial complimentary subscription ends, you will need to sign up for a paid mydlink Cloud Recording subscription to continue enjoying the benefits of cloud recording and streaming.

One issue we found was motion detection. If you’ve used security cameras before, you’ll know that quite a bit of them struggle with this. It’s a little too sensitive to motion, especially during the day. I was getting far too many false positive alerts.

Thankfully, the sound detection feature on this security camera is better.

In short, the D-Link DCS-8600LH Full HD Outdoor Wi-Fi Camera can be a truly significant addition to your home security system. Image quality is often a problem with entry-level wireless security cameras, but that’s not the case with this unit. The DCS-8600LH has the added advantage of being Alexa and Google Assistant enabled.
