Installation

The D-Link DCS-4802E offers a couple of connection options via the supplied harness. It provides connectivity to an external DC power source or an 802.3af PoE module. We prefer to use PoE as running just the ethernet cable can be easier in tricky locations than power + ethernet.

If you don’t have the surface area required to mount the camera directly to the ceiling or wall, D-Link have some optional mounting brackets available that will work with the DCS-4802E.

Once you have installed the camera in the desired location, the next step is to configure a video recorder to capture and store the video footage. For our testing we used the Synology NVR216.

Getting the camera recognised was a fairly easy process with the Synology NVR216. At first, it wasn’t being picked up as a Synology supported camera but after switching to ONVIF everything worked as expected.

Performance

As most cameras perform well under daylight conditions, I decided to focus more on how it went under low or no light. The DCS-4802E was tested under the following conditions:

  • Outdoor area, daylight with cloudy coverage
  • Outdoor area, ambient light from above
  • Outdoor area, no light

Final Thoughts

The D-Link Vigilance DCS-4802E is a reliable, small and compact surveillance camera that is capable of delivering great image quality. The low light performance was on par with what we expected from D-Link.

In our review, the DCS-4802E definitely came across as an attractive and polished camera for anyone being serious about a security surveillance project for the home.

We also recommend looking into the optional camera mounts for a clean and professional looking install.
