D-Link AC1200 Mesh Wi-Fi Range Extender (DAP-1610) Review

The D-Link DAP-1610 is D-Link’s newest plug-in wireless Extender. It lets you extend an existing wireless network with a goal to eliminate Wi-Fi dead zones by providing consistent coverage throughout your home.

D-Link DAP-1610 AC1200 Mesh Wi-Fi Range Extender

Over recent years, we’ve seen a flurry of small Wi-Fi range extenders and antenna systems that are supposed to extend the Wi-Fi coverage from a house back to a nearby access point. These range extenders can be a useful addition to a home network, but usually offer limited range and speed compared to a full-blown AC router.

The D-Link DAP-1610 has really squeezed a lot of Wi-Fi performance into a single compact and lightweight router, which is very portable. Some of the key features of the DAP-1610 AC1200 Mesh Wi-Fi Range Extender include:

  • High-speed Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Dual-band with combined speeds up to AC1200 Wi-Fi
  • Combine with a compatible D-Link Wi-Fi 5 Mesh Router to create a seamless D-Link Wi-Fi Mesh Network
  • Supports WPA3 wireless encryption
  • Gigabit Ethernet port
  • Signal strength indicator to assist with optimum placement
  • Easy setup via WPS or the free D-Link Wi-Fi App
  • IPv6 ready
  • Foldable antennas for maximum wireless coverage and reliability

Improving your Wi-Fi Coverage

The DAP-1610 uses the latest WPA3 wireless encryption and supports D-Link’s mesh network, giving you a much improved connection on the path from the router to your devices. It seamlessly picks up the same Wi-Fi name as your existing network (when used with a compatible mesh router) and allows you to enjoy a mesh connection throughout your entire home.

Check out this example from D-Link’s website.

With high-speed, dual-band 802.11ac wireless speeds of up to 1200Mbps – that’s 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 900Mbps on the 5GHz band – the DAP-1610 ensures a stable Wi-Fi experience for all of your connected devices.

The new WPA3 security encryption

As the Wi-Fi security becomes increasingly important, D-Link has ensured that the DAP-1610 encompasses the latest WPA3 wireless encryption.

While this is the latest and the best security standard for wireless networks, there is a good chance that you will still have several clients that will still use the older WPA2 encryption.

Final Thoughts

When selecting a Wi-Fi extender, going with a dual-band solution will get the best possible signal penetration into your home. Although tri-band solutions are effective, they require large antennas, making them impractical for most situations. D-Link’s DAP-1610 proves that a dual-band Wi-Fi range extender is a viable and affordable solution that does not require an expensive installation for efficient signal penetration.
