Chromecast 2 by Google is now available in Australia. Offering significant improvements over the original Chromecast. The original Chromecast was a beauty of a product. A sleek, compact, easy-to-use, easy-to-setup companion device to stream files from a compatible device or web browser. The Chromecast 2 improves on design and features and offers an improved device.
The most notable differences between the two models is the change in design. Gone is the chunky HDMI stick and is replaced with a colourful disc which comes with a permanently attached, flexible HDMI cable. The newer cable design HDMI connection allows for the Chromecast 2 to be plugged in to tight HDMI ports with much more ease. The HDMI cable also magnetically attaches to the disc for easier transportation and no flappy cables. The MicroUSB power carries over to the Chromecast 2 to allow powering from a power port or through a TVs USB ports.
The original Chromecast only supported 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n networks. The newer model can also connect to 802.11ac networks, including the 5GHz frequency band. The new model has a greater range and connectivity, which should translate to faster buffering of high quality videos and smoother playback.
The Google Chromecast 2 is available now in four colours and will cost AUD$59.
