We reviewed the 8GB i5 version and confirmed the specifications with CPU-Z:

Design & Build

As expected, the ASUS VivoMini UN65U is a sleek and compact unit. It needs to be small in design as the UN65U can also be VESA mounted directly to the back of your display making it a great media device alternative when the “stick” PCs don’t cut it. The front of the UN65U are a couple of USB 3.0 ports and the power button:

The left side contains a multi memory card slot supporting SD, SDHC, SDXC and MMC cards:

The other side has a Kensington lock if you need to secure the devices. Handy when this is used in public areas:

The rear of the UN65U is where the rest of the ports are:

You would have noticed the minimal air vents around the case, this is because the bulk of them are under the base:

Plenty of cooling holes on the base

We also popped the base off to see how easy it is to upgrade the RAM and storage:

The ASUS VivoMini UN65U comes with Windows 10 installed and a handle of ASUS specific apps and a trial version of Microsoft Office 2016. We installed VLC media player and hit some 4K videos first up:

The UN65U didn’t miss a beat playing back our sample videos and the CPU loads were well within reasonable limits. Pretty happy with 4K playback, we ran CrystalDiskMark to see how fast the M.2 SSD was and we were not disappointed:

Copying files over the LAN gave us impressive peaks as well as we had no problems saturating the gigabit link:

Finally, we ran FutureMark’s 3DMark:

The low score was to be expected as the mini PC is more suited to multimedia playback rather than 3D gaming or video editing.

Final Thoughts

The price and low 3D benchmark scores are the only negatives I found with the ASUS VivoMini UN65U. Overall, this was a great little mini PC and perfect for most multimedia use cases. The VESA mount option and 4K playback capability puts the UN65U at the front of the pack.

The M.2 SSD and gigabit LAN are more than capable of serving up high resolution videos and the unit played back our sample 4K videos with ease, showing no sign of CPU strain. If you are in the market for a little media-centric pocket rocket, take a look at the ASUS VivoMini UN65U.
