In what appears to be the start of an interstellar war, Asus have released their warship in the form of the RT-AC5300. With 8 laser turrets acting as dual band (2.4Ghz/5Ghz) antennas, the Asus RT-AC5300 boasts theoretical speed limits of up to 5300Mbps which is achieved with the use of a spare 5Ghz radio (2.4Ghz @ 1Gbps + 2 x 5Ghz @ 2.167Gbps). The second 5Ghz radio is useful for spreading the wireless load so that congestion can be avoided.

Apart from looking cool, the RT-AC5300 is huge, especially with all those antennas sticking up so make sure you have plenty of room in the area you are planning to install it. Likewise, the unit has fairly obvious cooling vents underneath. Up on top the vents are slimmer and well hidden in the design.

To provide a more realistic scenario, a Surface Pro 2 was used with a AC1200-WiFi USB 3.0 adapter from another room (separated by a wall, a void and another wall) to perform some file copy tests over the 5Ghz network.

Final Thoughts

Another flagship router with a price tag to match, the Asus RT-AC5300 joins D-Link’s Taipan as another cutting edge router which ignored the years of traditional router designs we’ve become accustomed to. I love the sci-fi look and feel of these high end routers, they certainly make the comms gear look a little more fashionable.

The RT-AC5300 is feature packed and comes with an easy to use browser based management software and performed well in our test scenarios. If you do a lot of streaming or game play over wireless, this is certainly one of the routers we recommend considering.
